Last Friday the Year 12 Team travelled to Dandenong stadium for our final SSV tournament, the State Finals, eager to win MHS their first volleyball state championship in history. The pool stage was a breeze, beating the likes of Ballarat, Wodonga and Craigieburn easily. Coming out of the pool in 1st place, the first real challenge came in the semi-finals against Kew High, a powerhouse with various state players to their name. Despite the tall challenge, the boys pulled through and secured a spot in the grand final, where we went up against Maribyrnong Sports Academy. Having previously lost to Marby in past competitions, the boys were determined to win and take hold of the state championship. And guess what, the boys did it. And not only are we the first volleyball state champions from MHS, but also one of the few schools to sweep the SSV State Championships. 10 sets won; 0 sets lost.
And of course, there are many people to thank; our coach, friend, and old boy of MHS, Ayden Uong, Mr Chandler for his ongoing support and Mr Veale for his effort and dedication to the MHS volleyball program in previous years. And last but not least, MHS volleyball’s biggest supporter, the best supervisor and the teacher that made everything possible, Bu Wantania.
Finally, on a personal note, a big thank you to the boys, for the determination and effort put in from the last 3 years. Not only are you all a bunch of extremely talented volleyballers, but some of my best mates and the greatest teammates. Looking forward to the tournaments ahead, and hopefully a couple more golds.
