Principal’s Report
Welcome Kasukabe High School
On Friday we welcomed our Japanese partner school Principal Mr Kakusaka, two of his staff and 21 students. Melbourne High School has a long association with Kasukabe High School. For nearly 30 years, the two schools have fostered a positive, warm relationship that has enabled students to build their language and cultural skills.
As I regularly remind students, I believe that having a strong understanding of other languages, cultures and faiths provides an edge in your professional and personal lives. These understandings build good relationships and global citizenship.
Thank you to the host parents and teachers who have assisted us with the program. We would not have been able to do it without your assistance.
Combined Mac Rob MHS Winter Concert
On Monday July 22, our two schools came together for a night of amazing entertainment. Numerous choirs, orchestras and bands performed. As I sat in the audience, I had to remind myself on several occasions that I was watching students perform. Their level of expertise is a credit to their skills and dedication, and to the skills and dedication of the staff who put in many hours of rehearsal time.
Additionally, I wish to recognise the technical staff and student volunteers from both schools. They worked tirelessly on the night and before and after the event to ensure that equipment was set up and then packed down and returned to the respective schools.
Select Entry Maths Day
On Tuesday 23 July Melbourne High School hosted a Maths Day for the four select entry schools. There was lots of friendly rivalry. Notwithstanding this, it was a great way for students to build friendships and engage in something that so many of them love – Mathematics! Thank you to Ms Felicity Rusden for overseeing the event.
Curriculum Consultations
Thank you to all who have provided feedback. To facilitate discussions and provide feedback, several forums will be arranged. Invitations will be sent out in the coming weeks.
2024 Boroondara Literary Awards – Congratulations Areeb Rayann 10A
Congratulations Areeb Rayann who has received a ‘highly commended honour’ in this year’s Boroondara Literary Awards. The fictional short story titled ‘Tale of Two Scientists’ explores the relationship between two scientists as one develops a ground-breaking scientific discovery. Emotions run high as professional jealousy follows. However, eventually the resentment subsides and the colleagues agree that working for the common good is much more important.
Mr Blair Mahoney, Head of English at MHS will attend the award ceremony with Areeb and his family.
Dr Tony Mordini
