Principal’s Report

Welcome back from term break

The school corridors have once again been filled with the noise of students chatting and laughing as they move from class to class. It is great to see the enthusiasm and joy.

I am sure the break was welcome and necessary, providing an opportunity to recharge and prepare for the next semester of learning. For our Year 12 class, this semester is particularly important, and I encourage parents/carers to do all they can to ensure their children are organised to meet all deadlines and have an effective study routine.

Friends of the 15th Brigade and Shrine of Remembrance Commemoration of the 108th Anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles.

On a very bleak Friday 19 July, the School Captain Rohan Green and bugler Joshua Lobo joined me on the lawn outside the Shrine of Remembrance at a service to commemorate those who lost their lives at the Battle of Frommels on that day in 1916. The battle is recognised as the single bloodiest 24 hours in Australian history with 5,533 recorded as killed, wounded, missing, or taken prisoner. This includes MHS alumni.

We gathered in front of the beautiful Peter Corlet statue named ‘The Cobber’. The Shrine’s website provides the background to the name of the artwork.

Stories of bravery and humanity emerged from the carnage. In the days following the battle, rescuers recovered some 300 wounded men from no-man’s-land. As one soldier carried a wounded companion from the field he heard a call for help: “Don’t forget me, Cobber.” This service is held at the Cobbers Statue on the Shrine Reserve, which memorialises that moment and heroic efforts of those trying to save as many lives as possible.

Our Master of Ceremonies was alumnus Lambis Englezos AM (Class of 1971). Lambis funds a scholarship and has made a significant contribution to Australian military history and in particular his work on uncovering the fate and location of missing service personnel.

Arts News – Winter Concert and MHS/MacRob Production – Rehearsals

Next Monday night we will be holding our annual combined schools Winter Concert. I look forward to seeing you there.

Rehearsals are in full swing for the combined play, Much Ado About Nothing. Thank you to the Performing Arts staff from both schools for their passion and dedication to these activities. They add so much value to our schools’ curriculum and student experience.
