OURS Week 5 Term 3 2024

Share

National Science Week

This week was National Science Week. This annual celebration of science and technology features over 1000 events including activities conducted by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums, and science centres. Science and technology subjects are well patronised at Melbourne High School and the students are supported in their studies by a very talented team of teachers and laboratory technicians. Many have postgraduate qualifications up to doctoral level, and many also have extensive industry experience. This ensures lessons such as the Year 12 Chemistry lesson below are engaging, build the connection between theory and practice, and help students apply the content they are being taught. Thank you to Mr Gooding for allowing me to observe his class.

Year 9 Slam Poetry Competition

It was the annual Poetry Slam this week and our Year 9 students did not disappoint. Each Year 9 Form Group put up their contestant and the students battled it out on the big stage in Memorial Hall. Thank you to Ms Tsilimidos who was this year’s MC. At times it was a tough task keeping the audience’s excitement in check. Thank you to all of this year’s contestants for taking the brave step to battle it out in front of their peers.

Sports Field Upgrades

Work has begun on the back courts. It will take a couple of months to complete the project, however once completed the students and external users will be able to play on a competition quality surface. I sincerely appreciate the work being undertaken by our Business Manager Ms Christine Greig, Assistant Principal Mr Paul Drew and Facilities Officer Mr Christopher Wyatt for their liaison with our contractors Tiger Turf.

Badminton Success

Congratulations to the Intermediate Badminton team in representing the school at the Finals of the State Schools Competition. The team firstly won the Beachside competition. They then progressed to the Metropolitan competition. They came a creditable third place after winning all their Pool A games but lost in the finals.  Well done to Jerry Yu, Garlok Phon, Isaac Yip, Anshuk Narayan, Harvey Lim and Tanav Rajesh. Thank you to Mr Andrew Mann, our team manager for supporting the boys through their training and competitions.

Combined Mac Rob MHS School Play – Much ado About Nothing

Rehearsals for the combined MHS/MacRob production of Much Ado About Nothing are in full swing. Please note that not all students are required for every session. Opening night is August 29. There will be some big rehearsals between now and then. I sincerely appreciate the efforts staff and parents/guardians are making to ensure that students are well prepared.

Millgrove Camp – high ropes fun with 10K

This week, 10K were on camp and from the smiles on this photograph, I think we can comfortably assume the students had a great time. Outdoor education is an important part of the school program, and the activities build teamwork, resilience, leadership and problem-solving skills. These are a valuable adjunct to the more formal aspects of the curriculum.
