Principal’s Report

The Power of Culture and Connection

Welcome to the 2025 school year! If you’re new to our community, we extend a very special welcome to you. This year, we’re excited to start with 1,403 students, including 312 Year 9s, 31 new Year 10 students, and 17 new Year 11 students.

It’s been a positive and smooth start to the year, and I want to thank everyone – students, parents/carers, staff (both teaching and non-teaching), and alumni – for their collective efforts in ensuring the school year has kicked off seamlessly.

A Strong Community Foundation

Melbourne High School is a vibrant community that excels both academically and in extracurricular activities. We understand that for new students, the initial weeks can feel overwhelming, but this is completely normal. If you find yourself needing support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your Form Teachers, Student Learning Coordinators, or our Wellbeing Team. We’re all here to help you transition successfully.

Our Guiding Theme for 2025: The Power of Culture and Connection

Each year, I introduce a theme to help guide our work together, and for 2025, I’m focusing on the power of culture and connection—and the essential role they play in shaping our community. While Melbourne High School has a strong learning culture in the classroom, we know that what happens outside the classroom is just as important.

Our commitment to developing well-rounded individuals goes beyond academic performance. High expectations are placed on both students and staff in the classroom, while we also encourage everyone to engage in extracurricular activities that help build valuable skills for the future. Whether it’s group projects, cadets, team sports, house competitions, or interstate and international exchanges, these experiences foster collaboration and personal growth. We do this because we know that universities and future employers value graduates who bring more than just academic achievement to the table.

As I reminded students during this week’s assemblies, the connections you make here at school often extend far beyond your time at Melbourne High. These relationships and experiences help shape the path ahead, both in further study and future careers.
