Principal’s Report

Recent events

Earlier this week, our Deputy Secretary, Schools and Regional Services, Dr David Howes, wrote that “at a time when we should all be celebrating, we, together with the whole of Australia, are instead sharing in the grief that follows the appalling events at Bondi Beach.”

I echoed this sentiment at our end-of-year staff morning tea on Monday. Normally we would be celebrating another very successful year, but this year, the prevailing feeling was one of profound sadness. The events of last Sunday night deeply shocked us all, and for many members of the MHS community, they have brought acute grief.

On behalf of the school, I extend heartfelt condolences to everyone impacted by this tragic and distressing incident. As I reiterated in my communication to the school community on Monday morning, we remain committed to supporting any student affected by these events. Students are encouraged to reach out to a member of the Wellbeing Team or their Student Learning Coordinator for support.

VCE Results

Congratulations to the Class of 2025. The results were stellar.

Dux – Olly Downing

Olly was our Dux for 2025. He along with Jonah Lau and Zhanyi Li obtained a perfect score of 99.5.

These results are a testament to the dedication of our students, the unwavering support of families, the tireless efforts of our staff, and the support of alumni who provide mentoring, workshops and scholarships.

Five Highs Cricket Carnival – 8–12 December

This year, our First XI travelled to Adelaide to compete in the Five Highs Cricket Carnival. The carnival is an annual national school cricket competition contested by five high schools:

  • Sydney Boys High School (NSW)
  • Melbourne High School (VIC)
  • Brisbane State High School (QLD)
  • Adelaide High School (SA)
  • Kent Street Senior High School (WA)

Established in 1983, the carnival is conducted in a round-robin format, with each school playing one-day (50-over) matches against every other team. The schools rotate the hosting. Melbourne High School will have the honour of hosting the carnival next year.

In addition to the main competition, a longstanding rivalry fixture between Sydney Boys High School and Melbourne High School determines the Cec. Rubie Trophy. We are pleased to report that the trophy has returned home for the second consecutive year.

Congratulations to all members of the team, and sincere thanks to our coaches, Mr Fitzgerald and Mr Fall, whose leadership and commitment were exemplary.
