The value of co-curricular programs
Our co-curricular and extracurricular programs play an important role in shaping well-rounded young men.
The past fortnight has provided further examples of the many activities in which students participate beyond the classroom. These experiences cultivate leadership, teamwork, resilience and other essential skills that complement and enrich their academic learning.
Cadet Dining-In Dinners
Over the past two weeks, the Air Force and Army Cadet Squadrons have each celebrated their annual Dining-In Dinner. These formal occasions recognise the traditions, discipline and service associated with military training, while also celebrating the leadership, teamwork and camaraderie developed through cadet activities.
I had the pleasure of attending the Army Cadet Dining-In Dinner. Our special guest on the evening was alumnus and former Governor of Victoria, the Honourable Alex Chernov AC KC. His presence provided a wonderful opportunity for students to hear from a distinguished Old Boy whose career exemplifies leadership and service.

Young Ambassador Leadership Program
Young Ambassadors are Year 9 and Year 10 students who participate in programs and commemorative services at the Shrine. They are appointed for a 12-month period beginning in December each year.
This year, 10 students from across Victoria were selected, including one of our Year 10 students, Augustus Buividas, who is pictured below and featured on the Young Ambassador website.
The students had the opportunity to work alongside First Nations Artist-in-Residence Iluka Sax-Williams to produce a sculpture honouring the enduring service of First Nations people in the Australian Defence Force, from the Boer War to the present day.

MHS Astronomy Club
A belated thank you to Anshuk Narayan for preparing this report.
‘On Friday 17 July, members of the MHS astronomy club welcomed volunteers from the Astronomical Society of Victoria (ASV) to host the annual MHS Stargazing Night. Students enjoyed a competitive astronomy quiz, engaged in lively discussions about the privatisation of space and the future of space exploration, and were treated to an engaging presentation from Steve Thurm, coordinator of Astronomy for the People.
Despite the chilly conditions, students, staff, and some lucky Old Boys from the Class of 2016 reunion were rewarded with spectacular views of the night sky, including distant nebulae, star clusters, venus and intricate details of the moon through the ASV’s powerful telescopes. The Astronomy Club Cabinet also provided refreshments to ensure everyone could enjoy the night.
The 2026 Stargazing Night was a memorable celebration of curiosity and education, inspiring students to look beyond our planet and explore the vast wonders of the universe.’

Winter Soirée, Thursday 13 August
A sincere thank you to Mr Todd McNeal and the Music team for their involvement in this special event. Events such as these provide students with an opportunity to perform for their families and friends.
With more than 30 ensembles and several hundred students undertaking instrumental music, our concerts and performances ensure that we maximise opportunities for our gifted musicians to share their talents. On this occasion, the audience enjoyed performances spanning a range of eras, featuring instruments including harp, organ, violin, piano, guitar, bassoon and marimba.
Adelaide High School Visit: Prefects Cup, 16–19 August
Thank you to all the families who have opened their homes to host our visiting students. The Prefects Cup has a long history, dating back to 1910.
Billeting is an important part of the exchange, with many students forming long-lasting friendships through the experience. I look forward to a friendly rivalry on the field during the week.
