Principal’s Welcome

Situated in Forrest Hill, South Yarra, Melbourne High School continues to be a geographical and educational icon in Victoria’s secondary schooling landscape.

Welcome to Melbourne High School

Potential is only the beginning.

Students arrive at Melbourne High with exceptional ability. What happens next is what defines our School.

This is a place where ideas move quickly, and ambition feels at home. Students learn alongside bright, curious peers and exceptional teachers who know how to bring out their best. They are encouraged to go deeper, reach further and follow their interests wherever they lead.

Learning here is challenging by design. Students meet complex ideas, high expectations and new ways of thinking. They learn that talent alone is not enough. It takes effort to turn talent into achievement, character to use it well and purpose to make it matter.

They also discover that the greatest growth often begins when something no longer comes easily.

Students find themselves among people who share their interests, test their thinking and lift their belief in what is possible. Excellence becomes something they pursue together.

The opportunities at Melbourne High are just as rich beyond the classroom.

From well before the first bell until long after the last, the School is alive with activity. Students move between demanding lessons, orchestra rehearsals, debates, sporting fields, performances and clubs built around interests they may have only just discovered.

The School is full of places to contribute, compete, create and lead.

The point is not simply to be busy. It is to discover.

An interest can become a passion. A passion can become a strength. Students begin to see where their talents and interests meet the needs of the world around them. That discovery can change a life.

For almost a century, the Castle on the Hill has been home to these discoveries. Its towers, halls, assemblies, songs and Houses connect today’s students with generations who came before them.

But Melbourne High has never mattered simply because of its history. It matters because of what continues to happen here.

Over four years, students gain a wider view of the world and their place within it. They develop knowledge, confidence and lasting friendships. They learn to think for themselves, work with others and understand the difference they can make.

Character is revealed in how students use their abilities, treat others and make space for voices beyond their own. Leadership is measured not by status, but by responsibility.

Melbourne High graduates have long helped shape the professions, sciences, arts, industries, communities and public life of our city, our state and our nation.

The next generation will enter a world of new challenges and extraordinary possibilities. We prepare them for both.

As Principal, my ambition is that every student leaves Melbourne High ready not simply to succeed in the world, but to shape it.

They should leave knowing what they can do, what matters to them and where they can make their greatest contribution.

That is the promise of Melbourne High School: not simply to recognise potential, but to expand what is possible.
