Principal’s Report

Welcome back from term break. I wish to acknowledge and thank M. Paul Drew for taking the Acting Principal role for the first 9 days of term while I was on long service leave.

I returned to work deliberately on Friday October 18 as it was the Year 12’s Celebration Day. This day was a significant milestone for most of them and me as we both started at MHS on the same day in 2021. As I mentioned at the assembly, I have watched them grow and develop, and I am immensely proud of their achievements.

Bluey Truscott Scholarships

At Friday’s Assembly we also awarded four Year 10 students with the Bluey Truscott Scholarships.

As noted on the MHSOBA website, The Bluey Truscott Scholarship is awarded annually by the MHS Old Boys’ Association. It recognises students who display all-round excellence in five areas: leadership; co-curricular involvement; sport; academic endeavour and results; and general school community involvement.

The Scholarship is awarded in memory of Squadron Leader Keith William Truscott, who was killed in an aircraft accident on 28 March 1943 at the age of 26.

Affectionately known as “Bluey”, Truscott is buried in Karrakatta Cemetery in Western Australia and his first Spitfire is on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. He was serving in the Pacific in defence of Australia at the time of his death, having previously survived the Battle of Britain.

During his time at Melbourne High School, Bluey Truscott was a Prefect, House Captain of Forrest and a member of the First XI and First XVIII. He played football for the MHSOBA and the Melbourne Football Club, whose best and fairest award is named the Bluey Truscott Memorial Trophy. He was renowned for his sense of humour and practical jokes.

This year’s recipients are –

  • Aaron Cartwight (Pictured below with MHSOBA representative Bowen Hafey)
  • Hamish Fraser
  • Marley Tan
  • Taiyo Wang

Each recipient will receive a financial contribution towards their studies and a membership to the MHSOBA until the age of 30.

Year 9 Tomorrow Man

Year 9 students will be participating in the ‘Tomorrow Man’ program next Tuesday 22 October. Students will explore the impact of banter and harmful behaviours and the importance of boundaries and how to communicate them.

A parent session will be available on Wednesday 23 October. Details are available here.
