Celebrating Achievements in Science with Rachel Westaway MP

This week, we were delighted to welcome our local Member of Parliament, Rachel Westaway, to Melbourne High School. Rachel is the MP for Prahran and proudly holds the distinction of being the first person of Thai heritage elected to the Victorian Parliament, as well as only the second woman to represent the electorate since its establishment in 1889.

Rachel’s journey mirrors those of many Melbourne High School students and alumni. Coming from a migrant background with parents who worked tirelessly to provide her with educational opportunities, Rachel pursued tertiary studies, built a career in business, and ultimately entered public service.

In her inaugural speech, Rachel shared:
“Being an only child with tiger parents, I was determined to get ahead. I completed my degree at Monash University in sociology and Australian politics; later I obtained graduate qualifications in business, immigration law and teaching.”
Many in our school community can certainly relate to her story.

During her visit, Rachel generously spent time with several Year 9 classes, answering questions and speaking candidly about her experiences. A highlight of her visit was the presentation she made to Leon Yu (9B), who has been recognised as one of only a handful of Year 9 students nationwide to receive an ICAS Science Medal. Congratulations to Leo on this remarkable achievement!

New Staff – Welcome Kristina Rowell HR Manager

We are pleased to welcome Kristina Rowell, who will be joining our team on November 10 as the school’s new Human Resources Manager.

In this role, Kristina will collaborate closely with the leadership team to develop and deliver a number of strategic initiatives. She will also oversee key operational HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, and employment contracts.

Kristina brings over 15 years of experience in Human Resources and Organisational Development across the government, private, and not-for-profit sectors. She holds qualifications in law, psychology, and human resources and has a strong track record in driving initiatives that support workforce performance and organisational growth.

We look forward to the expertise and perspective Kristina will bring to our school community.

Welcome Back, Class of 2024

We were delighted to recently host the 1-Year Reunion for the Class of 2024, held at the Unicorn Club. This informal gathering gave our newest alumni the chance to return to the Castle on the Hill, reconnect with friends, and be reminded that Melbourne High School remains a supportive part of their journey beyond graduation.

A heartfelt thank you to my Executive Assistant, Ms Petra Theilhaber, and our Careers Officer, Mr Bill Theodoropoulos, for organising the event, and to Assistant Principal, Mr Paul Drew, for his support on the night.

We look forward to continuing our connection with the Class of 2024 and following their future accomplishments.

Year 9, 10 and 11 Exams Begin

Year 9, 10 and 11 exams commenced on Monday. All students have received a separate communication outlining their individual exam schedules, along with the school’s expectations and requirements.

In the lead-up to exams, students are reminded to make use of the many study resources available such as past exam papers. The library is also a place students can access for quiet revision.

We also encourage students to look after their wellbeing during this period. Maintain healthy routines, seek support from peers and family, and reach out to our Wellbeing Team if you need a listening ear or guidance.

I wish every student the very best. Your hard work, focus, and resilience will serve you well.
