Turning of the Sod Event
Celebrating Our Legacy – 100 Years at Forrest Hill

On 18 February, Melbourne High School marked the first of several significant milestones leading into our Centenary at Forrest Hill, to be celebrated next year. The Turning of the Sod ceremony commemorated the moment, 100 years ago, when construction began on what has become our iconic “Castle on the Hill”.

The event was officiated by Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, Governor of Victoria, and attended by distinguished guests including Ms Rachel Westaway MP, Member for Prahran, along with staff, students, alumni, and members of the wider Melbourne High School community. Together, we gathered to honour this auspicious moment in the history of Victorian public education.

The ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the School’s enduring legacy as a lighthouse school. From the daily formality of flag‑raising, to our cadet and sporting traditions, and our artistic and entrepreneurial initiatives, Melbourne High School continues to exemplify what a truly holistic education looks like, one that prepares graduates to lead and contribute meaningfully to the communities they will serve.

As the Governor reflected, we honour the work of those who came before us. Guided by our motto—Honour the Work and the Work Will Honour You, we continue that legacy today through sustained effort, grit, and determination, as evidenced by our outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements.

Last Wednesday was a proud and memorable occasion, and a powerful affirmation of Melbourne High School’s enduring contribution to public education.

To everyone who helped to make the day such as special event, a heart-felt and sincere thank you.
