OURS
Week 1 Term 2 2026
Remembering the ANZAC Spirit
When you walk into the foyer at Melbourne High School, you are not simply entering the foyer of a public school, you are stepping into a place of remembrance. Each day, we are reminded that many of our alumni served their country, and that some made the ultimate sacrifice.
The Melbourne High School World War I Memorial opposite the front doors honours members of our community who gave their lives in the Great War (1914–1918). It bears the Latin inscription “Qui procul hinc. Qui ante diem perierunt”—“Who died far from here, before their time’, recognising that many of the fallen were still boys and young men in the prime of their lives.
In recognition of this legacy, we will pay our respects to our ANZACs through a series of school and community commemorations, culminating in the annual student service at the Shrine of Remembrance presided over by the Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC.
While we acknowledge the tragedy and ongoing reality of war, and do not condone its devastation, it remains right to honour those who served and those who did not return. We remember their courage, their sacrifice, and their enduring legacy.
Lest we forget.

Welcome back from term break
It has been pleasing to see everyone settling in well after the Easter break. The term ahead will have several important activities. Next week will be our Athletics Carnival. A separate communique will be sent out with the relevant information.
As always, we encourage students to remain organized and reach out if they need any support. In the first instance, students should speak to their subject teachers if they have specific questions related to their academic work. The Student Learning Coordinators (Year Level Coordinators) and Wellbeing Team can assist with matters related to attendance, engagement and well-being.
Inaugural MHS Europe Study Tour – A Journey of Learning, History, and Discovery
During the recent school holidays, Melbourne High School launched its inaugural Europe Study Tour, offering students an exceptional opportunity to experience learning beyond the classroom.
A sincere thank you to Mr Robert Sette, Ms Helen Bekos, and Mr Mark Goody, who accompanied the group and me on this memorable journey.
The first stage of the tour provided rich academic and historical experiences, including visits to Bletchley Park, home of the World War II codebreakers, Oxford University, and the Science Museum in London.

The second stage of the tour took students to Paris, Milan, and Rome, where they explored some of Europe’s most iconic cultural landmarks. Highlights included the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre, the Colosseum, and the Vatican Museums, each offering a window into the art, history, and culture of earlier civilisations.
A particular highlight for the students was their experience at Gladiator School in Rome, which proved to be an unforgettable and highly engaging moment of the trip.
Beyond the scheduled program, the tour fostered independence, resilience, and strong connections among students. As the first experience of its kind at Melbourne High School, this inaugural Europe trip represents an exciting step in expanding global learning opportunities for our students.
May 1 – Late start – Remembering the legacy of former Principal Brigadier George Furner Langley (1 May 1891 – 24 August 1971)

Melbourne High School observes a late start on 1 May (or the nearest school day) each year in recognition of former Principal Brigadier George Furner Langley.
When Brigadier Langley retired as Principal of MHS on 1 May 1956 the Governor of Victoria took the unprecedented step of attending Langley’s final Assembly. In those days teachers were required to retire on their 65th birthday.
The Governor, General Sir Dallas Brooks held Langley in high regard. He had an outstanding military career serving in two world wars with distinction and was regarded as an outstanding Principal.
An old boy of the school himself he is recognised as an inspirational principal and much
loved. He recruited talented staff at a time when this was difficult to do, and he
encouraged innovation strongly endorsed and expanded the School’s co-curricular program.
At the final assembly the Governor used his vice-regal powers and declared that hereafter the school would commence a half an hour later on 1 May in honour of Langley.
Accordingly, classes will commence at Period 2 (9:50am) this Friday.
International Linguistics Olympiad
We are proud to announce that four Melbourne High School students will represent Australia later this year at the International Linguistics Olympiad. This is an exceptional achievement and reflects their outstanding ability, dedication, and commitment to academic excellence.
This success also highlights the strength of learning at Melbourne High School, where students are encouraged to pursue intellectual challenge at the highest level and extend themselves beyond the classroom.
Congratulations to:
• Edmond Chan (12A)
• Neev Shah (11C)
• Victor Tan (10N)
• Zachary Wang (10D)
We commend them on this remarkable achievement and wish them every success as they represent Australia on the international stage.
