Principal’s Report
Five Highs Cricket Carnival – Sydney
Congratulations to our team and their coaches Mr Fitzgerald and Mr Fall on a very successful carnival. The boys played well and were great ambassadors for the school, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and camaraderie. The Five Highs Cricket Carnival was first held in 1967. The inaugural competition was between Sydney Boys High School and Melbourne High School and the cup was named after NSW Education Department official Cec (Cecil) Rubie. The two schools play for the Cec Rubie Cup each year and it my pleasure to announce that this year we have brought the trophy home!
Over the years other schools have been invited into the competition. In 1981, Brisbane State High School and Adelaide High School joined the competition, and in 1983 Kent Street Senior High School joined. Each year one of the ‘five highs’ hosts the competition. This year it was the Harbour City.
This year the overall winner was Kent Street Senior High School from Perth; however, as noted, Melbourne High School did come home with some silverware winning the Cec Rubie Cup off Sydney Boys High School. It was a close game which in the end we won by two runs (182 vs 180). Other MHS tournament highlights included Alvin Simon (10L) who took 10 wickets, Kovida De Silva (11J) who achieved 103 runs, and Adi Reddycharla (10C) who made 46 runs and took 7 wickets.
Year 9 2024 Orientation
This week our incoming Year 9 students participated in an orientation program to facilitate their transition to their new school. Thank you to Mr Roberts and Ms De Bomford, our Year 9 Coordinators, and their team of student helpers for overseeing the program.
Summer Soirée
On Wednesday night the Music Department and a troupe of very talented musicians participated in our annual Summer Soirée. It was a warm night and post the event the Parents & Friends provided a barbecue in the Rose Garden. Diners were entertained with more music from one of our senior ensembles. Thank you to all involved – staff, parents/carers, technical staff, and performers. It was a wonderful celebration of our musical talent.
Nepal Update
The staff and students in Nepal have provided some pictures of this week’s trekking. I was also able to have a brief chat on the phone with Mr Sette on Friday. He reported all were well and thoroughly enjoying their experience.
As always, school life on and off campus continues to provide a broad range of co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities to facilitate the development of students’ leadership, sporting and artistic skills. As our motto states – we are more than just marks.
