Best Boys School, The Victorian Secondary Schools Orienteering Championships (VSSOC)
This past week there have been some notable sporting achievements. As I often state, it is not just in the academic arena that we ‘punch above our weight’, it is across all domains including the arts, technology, sport and community service. One of our successes this week was in the Victorian Secondary Schools Orienteering Championship. The last time we held the Best Boys School trophy was 2012. Congratulations to the 31 students who participated and a special mention to Wilfred Johnson who finished 3rd in the year 10 competition (40 minutes 31 seconds), and Vedant Patil who came third in the year 11 competition (40 minutes 31 seconds).
Baseball – a valiant effort
The senior baseball team lead by co-captains Charlie McIntosh and Noah Koulaouzos-Chun did a sterling job at the Victorian School Sport State Baseball Championships on Tuesday 21 May. MHS needed to win both group matches to qualify for the grand final. We won 15-1 against St. Albans Secondary College and then faced off against Mildura Secondary College, which is historically a very strong competitor in the sport. Unfortunately, Mildura won 4-2. Despite the loss, the umpire remarked on how well our team had played and the level of skill and sportsmanship they displayed.
Launch of Third Entrepreneurship Project
Monday saw the launch of our third entrepreneurship project. Over the past three years there has been an increasing effort to develop important business skills which students can use in later life. We already have a successful seminar series. Last year we launched an art enterprise social entrepreneurship project and on May 21 a project that will focus on global leadership and intercultural understanding. This project will provide participants with opportunities to obtain industry insights through webinars, workshops and site visits. A sincere thank you to Mr Koji Yoshimura, one of the parents for designing and leading the project.
School Council Meeting – community update
Our School Council met on Tuesday 21 May. The Council plays a key role in setting the School’s strategic direction, monitoring financial and academic achievement, and overseeing the corporate governance of the school. It has been suggested that some community consultations are undertaken to strengthen our community engagement and provide parents and carers with opportunities to hear about the school’s achievements and explore ways in which families can contribute to the school. Information will be released soon.
