Principal’s Report

Senior Social – congratulations on a very successful night.

On Friday 15 March the Senior School held a very successful social at the St Kilda Town Hall. Thank you to Ms Capon, the Senior School student leaders and the many staff and student volunteers involved. I was particularly impressed with the efficient bump in and bump out. I think we have a few potential entertainment executives in the making!

Here I am with two of the ‘Support Crew’.

Hockey Field Working Bee – Thank you Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) Hockey Club

On Sunday 17 March the MCC Hockey Club organised a working bee to tidy up the grounds around the pitch and the storerooms.

The Hockey Section of the Melbourne Cricket Club was formed in 1960 and by the following year had entered two men’s teams in the 1961 Men’s Melbourne Winter Competition. The MCC women’s section was formed in 1989. It was the result of a merger between the Nunawading Hockey Club and McKinnon Hockey Club.

The MCC Hockey website notes –

‘MCC Hockey is one of 13 sporting sections of the famous Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) – the other 12 sports being Cricket, Baseball, Squash, Tennis, Real Tennis, Lacrosse, Lawn Bowls, Target Shooting, Croquet (formed in 2001), and Golf (formed in 2003), Netball (formed in 2011), and Australian Rules Football (Men – AFL as Melbourne Football Club; Women – VAFA as MCC).  All MCC Sections are proudly known as The Demons.’

Melbourne High School has a strong partnership with MCC Hockey that extends over three decades, providing one of its two bases. The other is Elwood College, Ellwood. Together we promote the sport, provide the finances to maintain the grounds, and ensure the facilities are kept at the required standards.

The Melbourne High School Old Boys’ Association also uses the facilities for practice sessions and games.

The Australian National Rowing Championships – Sydney

The Australian National Rowing Championships is the culmination of our domestic rowing season for our top 2 crews. Clubs, schools and interstate teams come from all over Australia to meet annually for this highly anticipated event. Winning at the Nationals is certainly THE biggest highlight that any rower can achieve here in Australia. Melbourne High School has competed at this event for many years and has won numerous medals including winning Gold in the Schoolboy Coxed Four in 2016. The Regatta is being held at the Sydney International Rowing Centre in Penrith between Monday 18 March and Sunday 24 March. We wish our boys all the very best.
